Planning your visit? Here are the must-see events where you can wear your handmade mask:
January 31st – February 1st: Grand Opening. The "Venice Carnival Street Show" begins, and the traditional Water Parade transforms the Grand Canal into a floating stage.
February 7th: The Carnival heats up. Official Dinner Shows begin at Ca’ Vendramin Calergi and the most exclusive Masquerade Balls open their doors.
February 7th – 17th: The Arsenale Water Show. "The Call of Olympia" – a breathtaking show of lights and music in the ancient shipyards.
February 14th: Valentine’s Day in Mask. A romantic Saturday with special balls like "Carnival in Love" and "The Doge’s Ball."
February 17th: Martedì Grasso (Fat Tuesday). The grand finale with the "Flight of the Lion" and the proclamation of the winning "Maria" of the Carnival.

The mask is one of Venice’s most fascinating and recognizable symbols, an element that for centuries has woven together art, mystery, and freedom. Its origins date back to the times of the Serenissima, when Venetians began wearing masks during festivals and banquets to conceal their identity. This custom allowed people to overcome rigid social barriers: nobles and commoners could meet and celebrate together, united by anonymity and the magic of disguise.
The mask is one of Venice’s most fascinating and recognizable symbols, an element that for centuries has woven together art, mystery, and freedom. The Moretta, mysterious and silent, was worn by Venetian ladies, while the Plague Doctor (Medico della Peste), with its long beak, originated as a medical mask during epidemics before transforming into a theatrical icon and a symbol of human fragility.
